Action Not Reaction

When it’s hot out I’m short-tempered
When it rains I am depressed
When someone cuts me off in traffic I’m mad
When it is a cool and sunny afternoon I’m peaceful
When it’s time to go out on a Friday night I’m excited

We all have a list like the one above that goes on and on and on. Make your list now before reading any further.

Notice one things about these lists… its all soooooo reactionary. In my list for example, my outlook, emotions, and quality of life are always affected by something outside of me (the weather, other people, something to do, etc.).

How I would really like my list to read is this:

Wherever I am… whatever I do… I am content, at peace, and thankful.

My wife, if she were reading this right now, would remind me, in no uncertain terms, that I’ve got a long way to go. OK… I admit it. We all should admit it.

Most of us are bounced from one emotion to another, one expectation to another, one promise to another… day after day… and all too often we are broken, disappointed, and left without purpose or direction in the process.

The wisdom of the Christian scriptures speaks to a source of faith, life, peace, and contentment that dwells within us because God has gifted it to us. Like anything worth discovering… it doesn’t come easy, but with consistent searching and daily determination to rise above the ‘forces’ that cause negative reactions in our lives, we can be free. Paul, the famous follower of God, would pray for just this sort of enlightenment and freedom in people’s lives (from Ephesians 3:16-19):

I pray that, according to the riches of God’s glory, God may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through the Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Maybe it is time for many of us to begin this journey. Let’s get movin’ and meet up along the way!
