Believing in God… But Settling For Happiness at All Costs

We want happiness at all costs…   puppies and money and restaurants and football and flowers and the perfect:
you name it

Oftentimes we justify even our most questionable actions and decisions with the supreme goal: “but I deserve to be HAPPY”.

Sure, we all deserve to be happy…   and it can be a very worthy goal sometimes. But, there ARE things more important than happiness.

God wants us to be more-than-happy and not simply satisfied with the shiny things of life that bring momentary pleasure…   but soon fade. To be more-than-happy, though, is to focus on something more-than-ourselves.  This means we don’t always experience immediate personal happiness. Faith, hope and love are all directed upward (towards God), outward (towards others), and NOT inward (towards self).

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for God is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from God but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2:15-17)

Join us this Sunday at the Waretown UMC as we continue our theme on ‘The Christian Atheist’…   believing in God but living like God doesn’t exist. There’s a little bit of Christian Atheist in all of us, let’s discover together how to break through into a life of deeper faith and life!
