If you don’t come from a church background (or maybe even if you do)… the words ‘born again’ have all kinds of baggage and stereotypes. Most of us associate ‘born again’ Christians with those glazy-eyed, perma-grin, way-to-happy-to-be-real, people that have A LOT to say about Jesus and morality… but, are more often than not, a whole lot more ‘talk’ than walk.
It’s unfortunate. Being ‘born again’ in the Christian faith can be a moving, powerful, deep, experience of love, purpose, commitment, freedom, and grace. But, what is it?
Let’s start with a Scripture passage in which the idea of being ‘born again’ is found (John’s Gospel 2:1-10):
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?”
There is a lot to talk about in this passage, but we are only going to focus on one thing: “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” The truth is we cannot ever again enter into the womb and ‘do life over’. But, God gives us the opportunity to make a new start. And when we commit to making a new start in faith, life, and love… God’s Spirit promises to be a source of health, strength, and freedom for us.
Through the generations and centuries this experience of a new start has been so powerful in people’s lives that they have had to describe it in terms of being ‘born again’. Have you ever had an experience like that? Do you want to?
