Can Christmas Still Change the World: Worship Fully

“Are you tired of how consumerism has stolen the soul of Christmas? This year, take a stand. Join the groundswell of Christ-followers who are choosing to make Christmas what it should be- a joyous celebration of Jesus’ birth that enriches our hearts and the world around us, not a retail circus that depletes our pocketbooks and defeats our spirits”. “Worship Fully”

Prayer of the Week

(pray this prayer each day this week)

Holy God,

You are awesome. You are wondrous. You are love. you are light. You, oh God, are good. Thank you for this day and thank you for my life. As the days get shorter and the dark of winter descends you shine the light of your promise of healing, redemption, and salvation. This Advent season I turn my focus from the worldly concerns I have: for safety, security, comfort, and pleasure and give thanks for the coming of your Son, Jesus. God…   you became flesh and desired to live with us! May your spirit of grace, love, freedom, justice, and mercy exampled by Jesus be inspired in me. This week help me love and worship you fully each day, not just on Sunday morning. Inspire in me simple acts of worship: acts of kindness and grace, moments of joy and laughter, gestures of hope and healing.

In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Week 1: Questions for Reflection

Worship MEANS to fully embrace and invest our best into what we hold of highest value. The biggest enemy of worship is distraction. When we lose sight of what is most important to us, our actions take on a frenzied, desperate, and superficial character. We forget who we are and we forget who we were meant to be.

Make a list of the 10 most important priorities of your life. Then, make a list of the 10 things upon which you spend the most time, energy, and money. How do these lists compare?

If, in writing the lists, you found you spend more time, energy, and money on things that don’t hit your top 10 priority list. Advent is a GREAT season to make a change. Choose one neglected priority and nurture it with time and attention, joy and hope. Wait and watch for God’s blessing.

Now, apply this same ‘list-making’ to Christmas 2016. What are your top 10 priorities, where are you spending your time, energy, and money? Do your priorities and investments of time and money match up? Where is God in your Christmas? What simple acts of worship can you introduce into your Christmas season that blesses the world with examples of Jesus’ grace, love, freedom, justice, and mercy?
