Earthquakes and Hurricanes

Now that we’ve ended 31 days of reflection on the wisdom of Proverbs…   it looks like the events of these coming days will put our wisdom to the test. With the strongest earthquake (since God knows when) in the Eastern US and the very likely scenario of a hurricane impact…   how can we put things in perspective? So, let’s put together a checklist of  5 WISE responses to the challenges we are facing.

5. Don’t wait until the last minute to get things in order

4. Don’t rest on your own understanding…   listen to the experts and do what they say

3. PRAY

2. Know that God is present with you always…   even in times of danger

1. Be prepared for EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. So that when bad things happen you have the best chance of being safe AND helping others!

Of course, God does not promise that by any means we will always avoid the storms of life. But, God does let us know that God is with us. Sometimes, by all of our efforts, we still face a sinking boat. In those times we are invited to be faithful!

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4:35-41)
