How would you like to be healed?
OK… so it may (or may not) be a physical sickness that needs tending. Most of us have those stubborn places in our lives where ‘sickness’ reigns. No matter how hard we try… we can’t seem to get a handle on those things that cripple our lives. When facing these challenges many people think the only solution is some complex and difficult set of rules or steps. It’s part of our human nature…. we think difficult problems MUST require difficult and hard-to-come-by solutions.
Not true! In 2 Kings 5:13 we read of a famous and successful army commander named Naaman was struck down with leprosy. Searching for healing he comes upon ‘a man of God’, a prophet named Elisha, and is told to do nothing more than go and wash in the Jordan River (and have faith). Naaman is mad… did he come all the way to Elisha just to be told something as simple as ‘go wash in the river’. His servants challenge him:
if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, ‘Wash, and be clean’?
In other words… if you were told, Naaman, to do something complex and extreme in order to earn your healing, wouldn’t you have done it and not thought twice? So, why not take it when you can get it… when all that is required that you wash and be clean? Or, in other other words… have faith Naaman!
This is a lesson for all of us… sometimes the solution seems too simple. Sure, be careful of things that seem to good to be true… but there is something to be said for not making things more difficult than they need to be.
Faith may be a simple solution… but certainly not easy. We might do better stopping all the crazy searches for the next ‘fix it’ plan… and just ‘wash and be clean’ in faith.
