For my family… summer is pretty much over.
We just got back from vacation and we are all turning our attention to the school year, program year, church year, and work year.
It’s hard to get back in the swing of things… but there is also hope and excitement, because we get to start with a clean slate, new plans, and a fresh start.
I love fresh starts… because I usually make a mess of things pretty quick. Fresh starts give me the closest thing to a ‘do over’ that life will allow.
This is one of the things people have loved about the Christian faith for generations… fresh starts are part of the very foundation of it. We learn from the Bible that God so loved the Earth and humankind that God made a plan so that no matter how bad and twisted and messed up things got… there would always be a chance for a fresh start.
This is the whole ‘Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world’ message. For many non church going folks… that sentence is loaded with baggage. Still, the core of the message is simple, true, and renewing: no matter the problems in our lives (self-inflicted or otherwise) we can choose to live with positive hope, faith, and love from this moment on… and God will not only be there to strengthen us along the way, but will also help us so that our past mistakes won’t ruin our chances for a new future.
When we truly buy into the possibility that we have a new chance at new life (no matter what has gone before)… God’s Spirit begins working and healing in our lives. This is what it looks like (Galatians 5:23,25):
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.
Join me in making a fresh satrt beginning today… beginning now.
