I’m learning to play guitar.
Yep… I’ve been learning for a year now, and progress is slow.
When I’m by myself practicing I can get the cords and notes and strums pretty good… but for the life of me… I can’t really play the song musically. It just doesn’t sound right.
The other night, my guitar teacher, who, by the way, leads our music (along with my wife) during our ‘Preview Party‘ Worship Services on the 2nd Sunday of each month at the Barnegat Township Recreation Center 900 West Bay Ave from 6pm-8pm (see our calendar) [how’s that for a subtle advertisement :)]
Anyway, my guitar teacher and another good friend came over to my house the other night to ‘jam’. And what a difference! Even though I regularly have trouble playing… somehow… when hooked up with a group of people playing… I was able to do way better and learn way faster than when I am practicing by myself.
The moral of the story: community makes us better quicker! Paul knew this when he told the church at Thessalonica(1 Thessalonians 5:11):
Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.
When was the last time you heard something like that at work? When was the last time that someone said, “hey… let’s work together”. We live in a culture in which competition is king and individual accomplishment is the rule of the day.
Faithful Christians, the church… Barnegat Anew… offers something different… better. Let’s ‘jam’ together and all of us can get better… quicker.
