Giving Ourselves: Christmas Thought of the Day (14 of 25)

Our culture tries to convince us that everything is about me me me! What can I get? How will this affect me? Are my wants and needs being fulfilled?

This type of selfishness really makes us sick. Even though it SEEMS natural and smart to put good ol’ #1 (ourselves) first…   it actually increases our worry and disappointment while decreasing our sense of peace and well-being.

Anyone who has ever given selflessly to someone in need, whether a gift or some type of service, knows the freedom and joy that comes from forgetting about ourselves and caring for someone else.

Giving is the model lifestyle set by God’s very own self in the coming of Jesus at Christmas. For it is in the giving of ourselves that we find our true fulfillment and a spiritually healthy life free of want and worry for ourselves.

Many of us never experience this joy of ‘giving ourselves away’ because its scary…   and the influence of our culture is so great. But, if there is any time of year when the opportunity for a new start it at its best…   its Christmas. Instead of looking for what we may GET this year…   let’s look at how we can give of ourselves to those who need.

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? (Matthew 16:25-26)
