We’ve all been warned… be careful what you wish for.
Back in ancient times the arch enemies of the Jews, the Philistines, attacked and stole God’s Ark (the same Ark of Indiana Jones fame). Having got their prize, they took it into one of their temples in which they had a statue of one of their most revered God’s Dagon. When they came back the next day they found the statue of Dagon had just fallen on it’s face (1 Samuel 5:2-3):
the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and placed it beside Dagon. When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord.
Coincidence? I think not. Often we wish for God’s presence in our lives but we try and force God into our world… and set God side by side with those things we idolize. When we do this we shouldn’t be surprised when God’s power naturally causes our idols to buckle and fall.
After all… what can really compete with God?
