On Wednesday February 22nd (Ash Wednesday) we will begin what is known as ‘the season of Lent’ on the Christian calendar. During the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday (April 8th) faithful Christians are called to:
1. Reflect deeply on their faith in God,
2. Renew commitments to spiritual disciplines (like prayer, Scripture reading, etc.),
3. Give-up some bad habits or ‘guilty pleasures’ in the interest of becoming more healthy in body, mind, and spirit.
4. Take on some new good habits or faithful practices to express the hope we have that, through each of us, God’s Spirit and love can make a positive difference in the lives of others and the world.
So, we will leave 1,2, & 3 to be settled between each individual and God… but 4 we can engage together as we seek to build community in Southern Ocean County. On Ash Wednesday we will be launching our newest initiative: ‘Good Happens’. Each of us at Waretown UMC will be called upon to initiate acts of kindness and generosity in our daily, local community.
What we want to discuss in this forum (or on its counterpart at Friends of the Waretown United Methodist Church on Facebook) are suggestions for such acts of kindness and generosity. It could be shoveling a neighbors steps after a snowstorm ( please! no snow this winter 🙂 ), helping someone carry their groceries, etc.
We would like to build a list of suggested acts of kindness and generosity. Post them here, on Facebook, or email us!
