“Until we are able to exercise discipline over our bodies through the power of the Holy Spirit, our minds and spirits will be held hostage to our appetites and passions”. (Mike Slaughter, Momentum For Life, p.114)
A lot of folks who are new to the Christian faith (and even a large number of long time Christians) have a little trouble understanding who, or what, the Holy Spirit is. I can’t begin to answer that in any fullness here… but for the sake of our topic this week (Eating and Exercising) I will say a few things. First, the Holy Spirit is God’s very own self. Second, God has promised that for whoever seeks God earnestly in faith and strives earnestly in God’s will and way WILL be strengthened by God’s Holy Spirit. Third, the Holy Spirit (when given to us) becomes part of us… mentally, spiritually, emotionally, even physically (Christians call this “dwelling within us”).
I don’t know about any of you… but I am painfully aware of my frailty and shortcomings. I am painfully aware of my weaknesses and vices. If I ever have a shot at overcoming these things… it will be in partnership with the Holy Spirit. Notice I didn’t say that the Holy Spirit will do everything like some kind of magic or supernatural crutch, but rather, together WITH God I believe I can do greater things than I could ever do on my own.
