All of us are both ‘givers’ and ‘takers’.
A quick look around the world will convince anyone that there are more folks who let their ‘taker’ side outweigh their ‘giver’ side. Wars are nothing more than than one group wanting to ‘take’ at the expense of another group. Similarly, poverty, starvation, abuse, exploitation all arise because more people are more concerned with self-interest (taking) that interest in others (giving).
This sickness in the world is also evident in peoples relationship with God. Even when we earnestly pray… often its a ‘give me’ prayer and not a ‘thank you’ prayer. Yet, all throughout the faith tradition and Scripture, it is loving, giving, and thankfulness that are the marks of a healthy life (Psalm 50:23):
Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me; to those who go the right way I will show the salvation of God.
If ever any one of us wanted a quick and accurate assessment of our own ‘spiritual’ health and maturity… we should keep a record of our thankfulness… try it today:
