I Don’t Know… What We’re Waiting For!

When Jesus’ disciples asked him when the end of the world would come he said:

But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Matthew 24:36)

If we were to ask Jesus that same question today…   I can’t help thinking he would say: “It has already ended”, meaning that the world ended the day Jesus was hung on the cross and died. This is the whole Christian story! Jesus, who WAS, in fact, God, sacrificed himself so that the whole world for all time could have a chance at forgiveness and new life.

  • On the personal level we could be unburdened from our guilt, shame, fear, and anxiety and live in hope that we have a place with God for an eternity.
  • On the social/communal level we could be convicted our of injustice and reorder our human societies around loving God, loving neighbor, following Jesus, and living by faith.
  • On the global level we can embrace the wrongful death of ‘one man’ a longtime ago with the persistently wrongful and mistake-ridden lives of all humanity, and we can embrace ‘one man’s’ resurrection from the dead as the deepest hope and promise for all humanity by a God who loves us.

If this is all true…   then ‘the end of the world’ is behind us, and NEW LIFE is ahead!

Beginning right now!
