Ok… so now we have left the reflections of Momentum For Life (The Book) but we continue with the theme as we take up the idea of financial stability. Everyone knows how much money matters impacts life and life momentum! A famous Scripture that is often misquoted as saying “Money is the root of all evil”, but it actually says, “The LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evil”. Here it is:
Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. (1 Timothy 6:6-12)
I included quite a bit more of the passage because it has a lot of important things to say… things I would like to reflect upon all week. ‘Love for money’ can easily takes the place of loving God, loving others, loving neighbor in our lives. In our culture money is power, money is pleasure, money is freedom, money is status, money is entertainment, money is sexy… any ONE of those things can sidetrack us from love, service, truth, integrity, faith, faithfulness, modesty, and personal responsibility. And, at the end of the day… money can come and go. It is not guaranteed and, therefore, the power, pleasure, freedom, status and sexiness are not guaranteed either.
Money is not a fit and sure foundation for us to build and become the best we can be. Only faith in God, love for God and others, and legacy (what good we do in the world) are worthy foundations for our lives and self.
Don’t let money be your Valentine!
