“Love does not envy, love does not boast, love is not proud” (1 Corinthians 13:4b)

How’s that for setting the bar high?

Envy, boasting, and pride are all self-focused activities. Where self-focused activities take center stage… love has a hard time making any lasting impression or difference.

If human nature is guilty of anything (in all places and for all times and with all peoples) it is guilty of being ‘self-focused’. We see it all over our culture in the way we want, want, want… and what we are willing to do to get, get, get. We see it especially this time of year as getting the perfect gift, giving the perfect gift, hosting the perfect party, having the perfect tree, day, house, dinner, lights, decorations all point to our envy, boasting, and pride rather than in praising God for the promise of a savior.

Now, it may seem like it would take a miracle for us to stop focusing on self… and instead focusing on love, but Christmas is the time for miracles.

And this one is long overdue for all of us!
