Fear causes hesitation… and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true.

These are the immortal words of Patrick Swayze’s character Bohdi (Point Break). I am often reminded of them when I am out surfing in big, tropical storm, swells. That’s what we had on Saturday evening. OK… it wasn’t THAT big or THAT dangerous… but big enough to make me think.

While we are out there waiting for waves… every once in awhile… a ‘way bigger that the others’ wave comes through. These wave are no fun because they always rear up and break over much further out than all the others. For us who are just sitting out there waiting, it means frantically paddling out to sea in order to get over it before it falls down on top of us (ouch!). If you hesitate for a second… game over.

If, as surfers, we become afraid of this eventual ‘way bigger’ wave… we wind up sitting too far out in the ocean to catch any other wave… and our time is wasted. If we stay where all the good waves are… eventually… we get crushed by that ‘way bigger’ wave.

You don’t have to be a surfer to recognize the path of wisdom here. Giving in to fear leads down one of two paths… hesitation and disasterous results… or safety without the possibility of any reward or fulfillment. Sadly, too many of us live in these two senarios. Mostly, it’s daily life stuff that gets us… we are afraid to make a change, take a risk, or go after what we think would make life better. We say to ourselves, “what if…”, we fear losing what we have (even if it’s not that great) and we miss the best chances for making things better.

It’s no wonder that some of Jesus core wisdom had to do with overcoming this type of fear (Matthew 6:25):

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing.
