“Mike, if I look at any one of your 28 years here- no matter which one I pick- I can’t point to any one year that you’ve done anything really great… the thing is, you just don’t go away”. (a quote spoken to Mike Slaughter, cited in Momentum For Life, p.95)
The quote above was made to Mike Slaughter regarding his years as pastor at the Ginghamsburg UMC. By the way… he grew that church from 100 or so people to thousands in that 28 years. His church has been featured in national publications for its innovation in media and dedication to relief work in the Sudan. He is author of a number of books. Mike Slaughter is a pretty amazing pastor!
But, notice the quote from someone who knows him well: “I can’t point to any one year that you’ve done anything really great… the thing is, you just don’t go away”. For all the achievements Mike reminds himself and us that he (and we) are just ordinary folks. We don’t achieve great things with one grand slam swing of the bat… we do it with daily commitment to vision.
I remember the old Honeymooners reruns where Ralph Kramden gets involved with various ‘get rich quick’ schemes… and they always backfire in hilarious ways. Our culture today convinces us to value the ‘get rich quick’ schemes… the ‘home run shot’… the ‘instant gratification’ and success, and that to ‘make it big’ we have to be super-extra-ordinary. But the truth of the matter is that true greatness has always been achieved by ordinary folks who have set their hearts, minds, and spirits on a vision… and then committed themselves to it day in and day out year after year after year.
Each of us ‘ordianry folks’ can achieve greatness… it starts with vision, and is achieved by long-term determination.
