For the next several days I’ll be leading a daily reading of Proverbs. It is a book in the Bible which offers both practical wisdom and eternal perspectives. Join with me each day in reading a chapter. I will offer a reflection on one verse or topic from each chapter.
Proverbs 11 is another chapter full of practical wisdom. Peppered throughout the Proverbs is financial wisdom. In our culture of selfishness and material wealth, these verses may be of special help to us.
One thing we have to realize about God’s ‘economy’ is that it doesn’t run like ours does. In our economy, we have to spend spend spend and borrow borrow borrow in order to keep it going.
In God’s economy… the more we give away the more the whole world prospers. But, not only that, but the more we give away… in some miraculous way… the more we get back.
Many of us know the feeling we get when we do something nice for someone else. We actually feel so good that it is worth MORE than whatever it was we gave away.
Try it! Our economy may be on a rocky road… but God’s isn’t!
One person gives freely, yet gains even more;
another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. (Proverbs 11:24)
