For the next several days I’ll be leading a daily reading of Proverbs. It is a book in the Bible which offers both practical wisdom and eternal perspectives. Join with me each day in reading a chapter. I will offer a reflection on one verse or topic from each chapter.
Waiting can make us crazy! Yet, while we are constantly being reminded to be patient… sometimes our hope stretches out beyond the ‘breaking point’. I’m not talking about waiting for the next vacation to Disney World or the tax return check… I’m talking about those real deep hopes: when will I finally be free from addiction, or a bad relationship, when will I finally have the test results for that health problem or when will my loved one come home from the war overseas.
The wisdom of God tells us that we are fragile… and that our hope is fragile. But as fragile as we become waiting for our hopes to be fulfilled… so too are we strengthened when they are. We can use ‘longings fulfilled’ as a stepping-stone to greater faith in God.
When we have hope fulfilled we can move courageously to the next day and next waiting period with a strong faith and an unshakable spirit!
Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. (Proverbs 13:12)
