Proverbs 31

For the next several days I’ll be leading a daily reading of Proverbs. It is a book in the Bible which offers both practical wisdom and eternal perspectives. Join with me each day in reading a chapter. I will offer a reflection on one verse or topic from each chapter.

Proverbs 31

God’s wisdom always goes back to caring for the poor and needy. It’s a simple lesson really…   we are so likely to worry about ourselves exclusively that we don’t even see those in desperate need around us.

When we shift from selfishness to selflessness…   when we stop worrying all the time about our own interests and instead begin to worry about those who are really less fortunate…   we begin to live a wise and Godly life.

Here is the challenge: if you go out and do something KIND for the poor and needy around you…   God WILL give you a sense of satisfaction. God will trust you with wisdom. It doesn’t matter if you have made mistakes before. It doesn’t matter if you have never done anything kind before. God is in the business of showing us wisdom and life when we commit to serving others.

 Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
   for the rights of all who are destitute.
Speak up and judge fairly;
   defend the rights of the poor and needy.
(Proverbs 31:8-9)
