For the next several days I’ll be leading a daily reading of Proverbs. It is a book in the Bible which offers both practical wisdom and eternal perspectives. Join with me each day in reading a chapter. I will offer a reflection on one verse or topic from each chapter.
There are always temptations out there. They seem soooo enticing at the time, they appeal to our urges for immediate gratification, they influence us where we are the weakest. Whether it be addiction, adultery, lying, cheating, stealing, gambling, eating, anger or any number of other things… temptations have that nasty knack of derailing us quickly, completely, and unexpectedly.
The wisdom of God, found in Proverbs, would have us prepare for those temptations most likely to cause us trouble. And the solution is as simple (not to say easy) as it is hard (not to say complicated). What?
The solution is to simply practice keeping what is good and right and valuable and Godly at all times. When we do this we find ourselves prepared and protected when temptations arise.
For your ways are in full view of the LORD,
and he examines all your paths.
The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them;
the cords of their sins hold them fast.
For lack of discipline they will die,
led astray by their own great folly. (Proverbs 5:21-23)
