Churches are weird.
They sit around on Sunday morning talking about how they want to reach the world with the message that God is living, working, and loving in the world right now and always through the power of God’s Spirit and the work of Jesus. But… I don’t see many church folk out there bringin’ the message.
And I know… because I am out there. Barnegat Anew doesn’t have a church building so there is nowhere else for me to go… but the High school football game, the Barnegat Rotary, Southern Ocean County Hospital, Ocean Acres Golf Course, the Library, Spiaggia’s Pizza, Johnny’s Wings, Pirate’s Day, Wawa, the Municipal Dock, Lefty’s Tavern, The Farmer’s Market… and the list goes on. I don’t go around gettin’ in people’s face and preachin’… but I do let people know that a new faith community is forming in town and we are: sharing together in the love of God, creating together solutions for daily life, and acting together in faith serving the needs of others.
When was the last time you saw some church folk bringing any kind of message or example into the everyday world (not just the Sunday morning church building)? In Paul’s letter to the Roman he points out a simple truth with some simple logic:
the same God is God of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” 14But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent?
All Christians are ‘sent’… unfortunately many just sit.
