This coming Sunday churches all over the world will celebrate ‘Penetcost’… the time at which God’s promised Spirit and power would enter the world, and people’s lives, in a new and transformative way. Sure, in ancient places and ancient times… even other ancient religions… God’s Spirit and power has been seen at work in wonderful ways… but this was different.
The account is found in Acts 2:
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Whatever esle is implied about the ‘tongues of fire’ or ‘speaking other languages’ one thing is for certain… this Spirit and power of God made it possible for Jesus’ apostles to ‘speak’ into the lives of the people around them. And this was tremendous. If you know the story, you know that these guys didn’t have many friends in town… in fact they were hated and threatened by the Jews. But, we read in Acts 2, late in the chapter, that after the apostles spoke into the lives of others around them… these others often became friends, supporters, and fellow faith journeyers.
As we reflect together today… allow me to expand the definition of speak to include everything we do in our daily life. Truly, we speak volumes about who we are with our: attitude, values, actions, behaviors, the places we go, the people we see, the things we do… and then lastly (and maybe leastly) there is what we say with our mouths. Take the opportunity to ‘speak’ into the world around you with your life… make friends out of enemies, supporters out of nay-sayers, and find others together with whom to make your faith journey. If you find yourself on the giving end of things today… make it a point to ‘speak’ hope, love, encouragement, and kindness into the life of someone else. If you find yourself needing to receive God’s Spirit today… pray, and then keep your eyes wide open… you will find that God is ‘speaking’ into your life in countless ways around every corner of your journey.
