Taking Nothing

If we wait until we think we are ready…   we’ll never start.

Isn’t this always the way? Think about having kids and starting a family. Think about leaving a nice safe and secure job that you’ve been at for decades for something new. Think about starting a business, or facing a fear, or asking that special someone out on a date. There comes a time in which you’ve just got to do it.

Jesus called some of his closest friends to ‘do it’…  step out, start something new, begin a journey and project that they were in no way fully prepared for. It wasn’t quite a ‘now or never’ thing…   but surely, if it wasn’t ‘now’ for them…   very likely it would have been never. As they went out to tell folks about the ‘Kingdom of God’ they were talking up and living out a whole new way of life: built on love and not selfishness, built on giving rather than receiving, built on God’s plan and power rather than people’s plan and power. And if that wasn’t scary enough…  Jesus told them to go and take nothing with them as they travelled and exampled this message (Luke 9: 2-3):

he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. 3He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money—not even an extra tunic.

Jesus didn’t do this because he wanted to freak out his friends…   rather, he wanted to make sure that even as they went around with nothing they would prove the point: where the Kingdom of God is…   God will provide.

All of us, in some way or another, are waiting to do something BIG because we think we are not yet ready, circumstances are not yet perfect. Let’s not let that waiting turn into forever. If God’s Kingdom makes room for those who step out in faith…   and provides where they are lacking…   then today may be the day for everything to change.
