Unhealthy Shortcuts

I’ve been taking too many shortcuts lately.

I’m so busy that I’ve been living on a few hours sleep and eating microwaved taquitos for way more meals than I should. The result: I’m tired, less alert, and slow…   which makes me fall further behind, making me busier…   which leads to less sleep and more taquitos so I’m more tired, even less alert, and slower. This is what is known as a vicious circle…   aka ‘the downward spiral’.

In Luke 11:34, Jesus teaches:

Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light; but if it is not healthy, your body is full of darkness.

There are a lot of ways to take this verse. For the sake of being quick and to the point I’ll just say this: if we ‘see’ well the path of truth and health and right living, our lives will be full of these things. If we are prevented from ‘seeing’ and ‘receiving’ truth and health and right living… then our whole lives will be full of strife, illness, and trouble.

When we take shortcuts, become sick, tired, run-down, stressed we enter a downward spiral in which our attempts to ‘get ahead’ actually drag us further behind. In our attempts to overcome by cutting corners, burning candles at both ends, and not taking care of ourselves…   we actually increase the amount of illness and strife, which, far from moving us towards health and right living, intensifies the downward spiral.

When we are spiraling…   it takes real guts to stop and refocus our ‘seeing’, our priorities, our direction. But, it is the only way to really break the circle.
