We’ve all heard the saying: “You are what you eat”.
This goes for every aspect of life, not just eating. Think about it… if we change the saying just a little in order to understand ‘eating’ as ‘internalizing’ or ‘being influenced by’ or even being ‘fed by’ we can see the wisdom and truth of this saying.
If someone hangs around crime and violence a lot… they are prone to getting involved with crime and violence.
If someone hangs around smart, sensitive, and caring friends… they are prone to be smart, sensitive and caring.
If all someone ever experiences is a scary, threatening, environment… they are prone to fear and anxiety.
If someone experiences a positive and healthy environment… they are prone to being positive and healthy.
We would all be much better off if we were more intentional about what we ‘eat’… what we are influenced by. This is especially true in our spiritual life. Too many of us are walking around without clear spiritual direction or conviction… predictably, it results in a lack of inner peace and guiding truth.
There is a whole collection of prayers/poems in the Bible called The Psalms. They are full of wisdom, emotion, faith, and life… Psalm 1 has this to say about ‘you are what you eat’:
[those who trust in God] are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.
All of us can experience greater spritual wellness…
