Last night I took a few hours off and went surfing.
Ever since I was about 10 years old… I have loved surfing. I especially like those early morning and late evening surf sessions… the sun is setting (or rising), it’s peaceful and beautiful out in the water… dare I say… it’s a spiritual experience.
It is. Being in nature, riding the energy of the ocean on a surfboard, looking to the horizon of sea and land, hearing the waves roll to the beach… I love it… and I often find myself thinking about and talking to God. And, I love sharing all of it with others… I usually surf with my brothers, kids, or some close friends.
In The Gospel of Luke (12:34) Jesus says:
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Often, we don’t have such a wonderfully spiritual experience when we go to church. Many folks I’ve talked to have told stories of terrible boredom going to church as a kid. Many folks have admitted that going to church is often a chore. What’s up with that?
Well, while there are great churches out there with faithful folks who find deep fulfillment and joy in attending, many churches out there are just ‘going through the motions’, doing things the way they have always done them… and neglecting the most important points: are they inspiring and relevent, are they peaceful, beautiful, and powerful expressions of spirituality. Often… not.
If you are one of those folks who would rather go to the dentist than church… don’t be ashamed! It might not be you! Traditional ‘church’ might not have anything in common with your ‘treasure’.
The challenge for each of us is NOT how to suffer through another Sunday church service… but how to find a meaningful, fulfilling, inspiring, and relevent way to let our treasure shine. If our treasure is shining… then so is our heart.
And, if our heart is shining I would be willing to bet that God is not far off.
